Root canal treatment is needed when the pulp of the tooth which is the nerve supply of blood to the tooth is infected through decay or from having an injury. Root canal treatment involves having all the infection removed and cleaned thoroughly from the root canal and often requires two or three appointments with the dentist. Initially the first stages of the treatment involve taking the pulp away from the tooth and then having the root canal cleaned taking away any abscesses if there are any present. A temporary filling is then put in to the tooth only to be checked at a later visit to the dentist and then have the whole tooth filled permanently.
